Sensitive extension with a continued roof

The former winemaking village of Höngg transformed during industrialisation: workers’ houses gradually replaced the disease-prone vineyards, altering the landscape dramatically and creating a classic Zurich suburb. After 1969, parts of the vineyard slope were restored. Today, the layered composition of the historical village, vineyard and Limmat River defines the landscape, with Chillesteig acting as a vertical path connecting these levels.

Our design for the Rebhaus (vine house) proposes a careful southern extension that continues the existing roof slope and follows the natural contours of the hill. A generous window front frames the view of the vineyard, lending the space the impression of a tasting room, equipped with a kitchen island and fireplace for year-round use.

The extension features a white board cladding with dove blue battens, doubling as a trellis to support climbing plants and enhance biodiversity. On the front façade, the colour scheme changes to emphasise the original orientation of the building. A folding shutter in a contrasting colour provides protection against the elements in winter and acts as a sunshade in summer.

The extension is constructed using a modular timber frame with insulation, enabling flexible use and easy deconstruction. Aiming for Minergie-P ECO certification, the design incorporates efficient insulation and renewable materials. The potential integration of a photovoltaic system supports the concept of a climate-neutral city.
